News: The 1st Korean Film Festival In Australia

From 1st to the 5th of October at Dendy Opera Quays in the heart of Sydney Harbour the 1st Korean Film Festival In Australia (KOFFIA) will be held. Organised by the Consulate-General of the Republic of Korea in Sydney, the festival will host five days of film showings, forums, special guests and performances designed to generate an interest in the local community, and raise the profile of Korean cinema throughout the community.

What better way to kick the festival off than with a showing of Bong Joon-ho’s acclaimed Mother – just one of the excellent films lined up.

Other titles include:

Rough Cut – the debut of Secret Reunion director Jang Hoon is the unusual tale of a gangster who wants to be an actor and was written by director Kim Ki-duk.

Old Partner – Lee Chung-ryoul’s documentary about an old farmer and an aging cow. (Don’t raise an eyebrow at this description, it was a massive hit in Korea).

Secret Sunshine – from Oasis and Peppermint Candy director Lee Chang-dong and starring Jeon Do-yeon and Song Kang-ho.

200 Pounds Beauty – blockbuster comedy which is as ridiculous as they come but almost impossible not to like.

Like A Virgin – Lee Hae-joon and Lee Hae – yeong’s comedy drama of a young man raising money for a sex change – by wrestling.

The Housemaid – One of the big Korean films of the year, Im Sang-soo’s movie is a reworking of the classic 1960 film.

Castaway On The Moon – Lee Hae-joon’s follow-up to Like A Virgin (also showing) sounds like a riff on the movie Cast Away but is much more endearing – and off the wall.

If you’re in the  Sydney Harbour area there’s no excuse to miss this fantastic line-up – hopefully the 1st Korean film Festival In Australia will be the first of many.
